To many of us, the ideal holiday will mean sun, sea and sand meaning that tropical coastal resorts and islands are in high demand. When the weather is right, people like to go away to where they can get a tan and during the summer months, European resorts have literally millions of visitors to their shores. Taking a holiday during the European summer is not always convenient to many people however, so they may need to go away at other times of the year.

Other parts of the world are hot all year round and South East Asia in particular has very enjoyable weather when it's cold and rainy elsewhere. The fine tropical weather attracts visitors from far and wide and Phuket, Thailand is one such example of this. With its fantastic white sandy beaches, crystal clear topaz waters and hot sunny weather, the Andaman Island is one of the top tourist destinations in the region.

With such clear water and its tropical coral reefs, Phuket is also a popular destination for divers that wish to explore the realms beneath the surface of the water. With a very diverse eco system that is home to a multitude of different species, visitors to the island will get to witness nature at its very best. Of course, the island is also home to many other magnificent beasts and visitors will also get to see elephants, monkeys plus a myriad of other creatures in the island’s thick tropical mangrove forests.

Phuket in Thailand is famed for its beaches and warm tropical waters, but that is not all that is on offer. The island also has a hectic nightlife that can draw visitors from far and wide that are looking for something to do in the evening once the sun has gone down, as well as during the daytime. As the largest of the island’s tourist centres, Patong is where most of the action is with a night scene that will keep even the biggest party animal occupied.

Koh Phuket is also a shopper’s paradise as there are plenty of opportunities to buy up locally produced arts and crafts. Visitors can choose from large shopping malls selling national and international wares or market stalls selling trinkets and jewellery items. In Patong at night the streets come to life with numerous traders setting up their market stalls to sell their goods to tourists and locals.

Food fans will also be in their element as the island has countless restaurants with menus offering dishes from across the world. Delicious and affordable Thai dishes are a must try and the seafood is among the best that can be found anywhere in Thailand. If you don’t want Thai food for any reason that is fine also because you will find just about any dish from around the world you can think of. With plenty of pubs, restaurants and side stalls on the island to choose from, you will be spoilt for choice in terms of things to eat.

Much of the available accommodation will be found in Patong, with the towns of Kamala, Karon and Kata also having hotel rooms available. The more exclusive resorts in these towns are to be found towards the beach with less expensive accommodation towards the back of the towns. Some beaches on the island are home to the very exclusive resorts that are suitable only for wealthy people as prices can be very high, whereas away from the main tourist destinations, Phuket accommodation caters to those at the lower end of the scale.

If you are planning on visiting Phuket during the high season then you should book well in advance because it can become very difficult to find available rooms. You should also expect to find that there are more crowds and that prices are generally higher during high season. To get a better deal you should maybe consider going during the low season when there is lower demand for accommodation the island.
